Sankt Gilgen

 

Beautiful lakes, wonderful panoramas that the eye can see. The beautiful village by the Wolfgangsee is situated in the “Salzkammergut” region, in the Austrian state of Salzburg. Is was first mentioned in the year 1376 and five centuries later the shipping on the Wolfgangsee was the reason for the upcoming tourism. During this period many rich Viennese had their villas there. Nowadays St. Gilgen has about 4,000 inhabitans and lies approximately at 500 metres above the sea level. You think it's boring? No it's not! You will be surprised by the diversity offered. Although Mozart never has been there, his grandfather worked in St. Gilgen and his mother was born there. Places to visit

 

Strobl:

Strobl from the Wolfgangsee is situated in the northeastern portion of Salzburg. It lies very close to Sankt Gilgen and has population of about 3,500. The area is popular for watersports and hiking as well as skiing in the winter. On the lakeshore you can find a sculpture by Toni Schneider-Manzell. Furthermore Strobl has an attractive church the St. Sigism and Paris Church where the famous Tassilo von Fürstenberg is buried.

 

Hallstatt:

Hallstatt is a beautiful village near the Hallstätter See and is especially known for its production of salt. Because salt was a valuable resource, the village was historically wealthy. The village is famous for its small-town appeal and therefore a popular tourist attraction. If you are brave enough tour the world's first salt mine or visit the famous Bone House. Because of the extremely small cemetery burials are only accessible for a specific amount of time. After 10-15 years the bones are stacked in the Bone House. Who needs the Dungeon?

 

Bad Ischl:

The fashionable spa town Bad Ischl was first mentioned in 1262. In 1846 Franz Joseph I chose the city for his summer residence. If you are interested in the life of the imperial family visit the pompous Kaiservilla. In 1853 the engagement between Sissi (= Elisabeth of Bavaria) and Franz Joseph took place in Bad Ischl. Today the Seeauerhaus is the location of the Museum Bad Ischl. If you have a sweet tooth visist the famous Konditorei Zauner and enjoy delicious cakes.
