Belgium is situated in western Europe, bordered to the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. Although its surface area of 30528 km2 makes it a small country, its location has made it the economic and urban nerve Centre of Europe.
Belgium is still quite young as a self-governing country, since it gained its independence in 1830. At this time, the various regions of Belgium already had a rich history. Centuries of history have contributed to the diversity, openness, character and strength of Belgium today. Belgium's capital is Brussels, which has an old and fascinating history which dates a the way back to the 11th century where it was a small dukedom. .

Transport
You can reach Belgium either by plane or train.

  • The Brussels International Airport is located 8 miles northeast of the city center. Brussels Airport was chosen as Best European Airport 2005 by IATA and ACI.

  • From/to Belgium- International Connections. The train stations in London, Paris and Brussels are located in the center of each city.

Healthy

Belgium's health system is famous all around the world as a center of excellence for health care which has resulted in exceptionally high standards of health care and surgery offered throughout the country.

If you visit Belgium as EU citizen you should be holders of the European Insurance Card. Depending on the medical practitioner or hospital, the patient is either required to pay the medical costs on the spot and then request reimbursement from his health insurance fund, or he pays nothing and deals directly with the health insurance fund.
Patients who come from a country outside the European Union which does not have any agreements with Belgium regarding health insurance, will not be covered by the compulsory health insurance for medical expenses and repatriation.

Passport/Visa

US and Canadian citizens will need a valid passport. A visa is not required for stays with a duration of less than 90 days. Visitors from other countries should check the Belgian Embassy or the nearest Consulate Office for visa requirements.

Shopping

Shopping in Belgium can be a real pleasure, as there are many wealthy cities, such as Brussels and Antwero, filled with shops selling everything from luxury brand clothes to household goods. As a rule, shops are generally open from Monday to Saturday at 10am. As an exception, shops are also open two Sundays before Christmas and on New Year's Eve. In Belgium, promotional discounts are only allowed in January and July, therefore shops need to shift unsold stock as soon as possible, which means huge discounts are given during these two months.
