Rio de Janeiro (also called Rio), is certainly the most famous city in Brazil. It may be the most famous city but it is not the largest. It’s the second largest city just after São Paulo. A lot of people are still thinking that Rio is the capital of Brazil but it is a common mistake because the real one is Brasilia. This mistake comes from the fact Rio was the capital of Brazil for 2 centuries. You will never be bored in Rio because of its beaches, (like Copacabana), landscapes, football teams... AND of course its carnival !

In Rio, it is impossible to be bored! You may choose either nightclubs, oncerts, bars with live music or street parties,...
Be careful: Rio is famous to be quite expensive. So the night, you can have fun but pay attention to your wallet.
Rio de Janeiro can offer enough options for everyone of us. For the people who like shopping, there are two “must”: Rua Visconde de piraja (which is the main commercial street in Ipanema) and Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva. If you like markets, Rio is maybe not the best city because there are not many markets but the ones which exist are really worth it!
About the hours: the shops are open from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Friday and from 9am to 13 pm Saturday.
Be aware that Rio stands in South America and so the currency is not the Euro or the Dollar,... but the “Real”. Do not forget to exchange your money at your bank before leavimg.
If you go in Rio, you MUST see:
Rio Carnival: the most famous and biggest carnival in the world. It takes place in February.
Copacabana beach: a famous beach in Rio, always crowded, there are animations from the morning to the night. Moreover the beach is lighted during the night.
Escadaria Selarón: 250 steps made of plenty colours (+= 2000) and long of 125 meters. The story is Selaron (the builder), started to renovate the steps because they were in a very bad shape. His passions for colours decided him to use plenty of them. Thanks to a Fanta advertising, using this steps, the place has become very famous !
Corcovado & Christ the Redeemer: the Corcovado is a high mountain in Rio (over 700 meters) and has become famous because of “Christ the Redeemer” which is a huge statue on the top of the mountain and gives a view on the whole city of Rio.
Maracana Stadium: a must, for all the football fans. The most famous stadium in Brazil is Maracana Stadium where the world cup final took place in 2014.

Rio has a particular climate due to the forests which surround it – a tropical climate. The temperatures often reaches 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Because of its tropical climate, in Rio the weather is warm and humid.
They are plenty of transports travel and it is very easy to travel in Rio. The most reliable transport is the metro but you can count on taxi’s too.
Bus: it is obviously the cheapest transport and the buses drive 24 hours/ day.
Taxi: if you want to take a taxi, you have 2 choices:
1) The official taxi: their colour is yellow and once you get in, the driver starts his meter and you will start to pay since this moment (you pay per kilometre).
2) Radio taxi: their colour is blue, white or green. The price is fixed whatever the time of the day, the traffic, the place,... It may be more expensive but once you are there, you can breathe.
Car rental: it may be not the best solution to travel in Rio because of the traffic jam,... but if you like the adventure, you can not miss that !
Tube: it is very cheap, the fastest, the safest and the most reliable transport. You can go anywhere, it is a very good choice if you don’t know how to travel when you arrive there.
