Set deep in the upper Ariège valley, the outstanding scenery and lush green mountain pastures that surround the town welcome you to the beautiful town of Foix.
The Romans were historically the first to enjoy the site and built a fort on the rock. In the twelfth century, an urban life develops around the abbey Saint Volusien (849) and the high castle before the year one thousand.
Foix knows its economic peak in the XIVth. It owes its prestige to its role as capital earldom still preserved seat of the States of Foix and the Governors of the Country of Foix. It was this glorious inheritance that allows it to be chosen as capital of the new department of Ariege in 1790, situated in southwestern France in the Midi-Pyrenees region.
As a founding city of the World Federation of United Towns, Foix is one of the first towns in France to build relationships with a Spanish city, Lleida, in 1962.
Foix is a tourist hub at the departmental level. The footprint of the medieval past and the Cathar time is very present. This still retains its medieval character as reflected in the narrow streets (Rue des Marchands, the Rue des Chapeliers), and some half-timbered houses. The historical heritage around the famous Castle of the Counts of Foix (X-XVth century) discovered during a walk in the streets of the old center with fountains, half-timbered facades, squares, its abbey of IXth century.
There are pretty alleyways with pastry, bakery, flee-market, one of which in particular you should visit. In the old market square you can benefit from quaint café’s and boutiques. Every Friday, Back to tradition with a market, this is the weekly meeting to find, in a unique atmosphere, local products, food and local crafts. On the Paths of Villote under Halle aux Grains, under and around the Halle Saint-Volusien and the Place Violet, you can find of clothes stalls, flowers, vegetables, local produce with for example the biggest selection of cheeses and honey ever in one place!
