It is the parish of Saint-Maurice of Gujan that created the commune of Gujan during the French revolution.
Go for an amazing walk at the heart of the maritime heritage on the coastal path that connects the 7 ports of Gujan-Mestras. Within a few minutes you will cycle from the coast to the heart of the forest.
Did you know that oysters are alternately male or female? The oyster-farming museum explain everything to you in detail. Situated on the Port of Larros, the museum was created by oyster-farmers in order to make their job known and to promote the Bay of Arcachon which is the leading European spat producing centre. With a modern scenography, "La Maison de l'Huître" invites you to discover the farming techniques as well as the history of oysters through the centuries.
Along the 6 km that constitute the shoreline, there are no fewer than 7 harbours in Gujan-Mestras.
Oyster-farming and the shipyards are essential on these ports. During the summer, boat trips aboard traditional boats are organized. We can find The "Pinasse", the emblematic boat of the Bay of Arcachon, was initially used by oyster-farmers or the “Argo” the sardine-fishing boat. In a preserved natural environment, regularly changing with the tidal phenomenon, you will enjoy panoramic views and authentic encounters in the Bay spirit.
In the middle of a pine forest, the Magdeleine Lake is an unique site with its casino, the bowling, the nightclub close by, the play areas and the attractions. As night falls, the lake completely changes and is bathed in a halo of colours, blue, white, green, yellow. This lighting, using the latest environmentally and economically friendly technology creates a truly magical effect as soon as the daylight begins to wane.
Every Wednesday in the morning, you can find the local market full of flavour, colors, and good spirit. It is a real a moment of friendship. Also every Friday, from April to October enjoy an attractive night market.

Gujan-mestra boasts a warm climate and sunny throughout the year. With its climate, the unending and cyclical ritual of the tides and the water rich in plankton, it has the ideal and necessary conditions for the reproduction and development of oysters (for example 10 000 tons of oysters are produced every year in the Bay of Arcachon).
Riding a bike or walking, take your time to discover Gujan-Mestras. La Hume, a small marina, also famous for its beach; Meyran, Gujan and Larros three oyster-farming ports, emblematic of the local maritime heritage and also Le Canal, La Barbotière and La Mole on the east side of the town. Otherwise, Gujan-Mestra is served by train from Archacon to Bordeaux, and by bus “Baia” with 4 lines (4 to 7).
