Welcome to Isola del Giglio - A pearl in the Tuscan Archipelago.
Giglio Island is situated in the Tuscan Archipelago and it’s a perfect place if you like the sea and the undersea world. It is one of the most important places for the diving in Italy. The nature and the trekking is really nice, because 90% of the territory is still uncontaminated, so there are a lot of wonderful itineraries in the Mediterranean scrub.
The island is tragically famous for the Costa Concordia disaster in January 2012, when the cruise shipe ran aground really near the island shore. The ship was completely removed in the end of July 2014. In spite of this, the environment has been protected from the pollution and now the sea and the shore are saft and intact, and the water is clear again.
In that period the people have been really helpful and have opened their island with great kindness and hospitality.
Information and Facts
There are three small villages in the island: Giglio Porto, that is the only one harbour; Giglio Castello, located at 405 a.s.l., with old walls, a stronghold and characteristic wine cellars for the Ansonico, the typical Giglio’s wine; finally, Giglio Campese, the more important touristic centre.
The biggest beaches in Giglio Island are four: Campese beach, Arenella beach, Cannelle beach, and Caldane beach. You can reach these by bus, on foot or by motorboat from the port. Moreover, from Giglio Island you can reach, by boat, another Island of Tuscan Archipelago, Giannutri, an uncontaminated place where you can spend a wonderful day.
Mild mediterranean climate every year, with a long warm season and few precipitation.
The only way to reach Giglio Island is by taking a ferry-boat in Porto Santo Stefano (Monte Argentario): there are two ferry-boat companies (Toremar and Maregiglio) and you can board your car, and in this case you should book this service, or leave it in the car parks near the port.
If you leave the car, in the island there are bus lines to reach the three villages, the most important places and the camping too. Furthermore there is a taxi service, or you can rent a car or a scooter.
The name of the island comes to the old greek word “Aegilium”, that means “goat”, because of the many goats which had lived there in the past. This is the true origin of the name, even if the people think it comes from the name of the flower lily (Giglio in Italian), which was the insignia of Medici, that had been a rich and powerfull family in Florence.
