The population of Australia is 22 million. In 2006 it was estimated that the indigenous population was about 500000 - about the same as it was when Europeans first arrived in Australia at the end of the 18th century.
Unemployment was high in the 1990s but at the beginning of the 21st century the situation improved. Unemployment in Australia stood at 5.2% in March 2012. Today Australia is a prosperous country.
Australia is famous for its warm and wonderful climate that is continuous throughout the year. The region is also known for its Aboriginal culture wich is one of the oldest in the world. Australia has magnificent natural physical features and varied landscapes.

Transport
All of Australia's capital cities are served by wide variety of public transport, including buses, ferries, monorail, light rail and trains. Taxis charge according to their meter.
Health
The Australian Goverment has signed Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (RHCA) with the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Norway, Slovenia, Malta and Italy. These agreements entitle you to some subsidised health services for essential medical treatment when visiting Australia. Reciprocal Health Care Agreements cover treatment that is medically essential. This includes any ill-health or injury which occurs while you are in Australia and require treatment before you return home.
Emergencies
The triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right emergency service to help you. It should be used to contact the Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life threatening or emergency situations.
Passport / Visa
Passport: When you apply for an Australian passport you will need to provide original documents which confirm your Australian citizenship and your identity.
Visa: Most business and tourist visitors to Australia require a valid visitor visa. An Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is available to passport holders from more than 30 eligible countries and is the easiest way to apply for a visitor visa to Australia.
