Portland is a tied island group in the English Channel and part of the county of Dorset, in the South West of England. The coast has a lot to offer for those who travel to Portland. It belongs to the Jurassic Coast, the Dorset and East Devon natural coast which is protected as World Heritage Site. The notable Portland stone derives from the seabed: it is a white-grey limestone originally formed in Jurassic period and it is largely used in construction for example in Buckingham Palace. In Portland there is situated one of the largest harbours in the world, completed in 1872. Moreover, in Portland you can find three lighthouses, even if two of them are currently used for other purposes. Regarding to the history, the must-see is the Portland Castle, Henrician Castle built in 1539.
