Dieppe – The city of the inspiration of the French painters

Dieppe is a coastal community in the Arrondissement of Dieppe in the seine-maritime department in the Normandy region of northern France. The population 33.375 in 2007. There is a port on the English channel are the mouth of the Arques river, famous for its scallops and with a regular ferry service to Newhaven in England. Dieppe became to the Pays de Caux, lying along the Alabaster Coast in the region of Upper Normandy. There is a sea and is a beautiful landing.


Church of Bonsecours for the mariners and high on the hill overlooking the ocean and the pleasure boats below it. The church built in 1876 and is a beautiful place. In the top you can see Notre Dame de Bonsecours great views of the ocean and town below. Place du Puits Sale is a wonderful little square set around a fountain is in the centre of town and is denomineted by Dieppe's oldest gabled house. There are a ancient café “Cafe des Tribunaux” built in 17th century and a favourite place of Oscar Wilde in the summer of 1897, as well as other writers and painters. It is still a popular place to have a drink. Pool salt water: really enjoyed in sea front. The spa is wonderful and is good for swimmers and kids. Dieppe Port is the most important thing in this town and is a area that is filled with boats and activities. You can walk along the boardwalk and look at the boats. There is also a fountain at the cornet of the port, and a small fish market really good. The big beach of Dieppe is on the left bank of the port. It goes into the cliffs on the coast of Alabaster, the distance about 1,6 km of beach. Is located near the Casino and the castle of Dieppe. There are a plenty activities on it as children playground, pools, etc. Square du Canada is in the centre the town and there is a Dieppe-Canada Monument, in recognition of the sailors who sailed from Dieppe to colonise Canada. Also mounted on the wall behind of a plaque that commemorates the Dieppe Raid, a disastrous raid that took place on 19th August 1942. Church St Jacques is in de old-town area of Dieppe. This is a Norman Gothic church which dominate Place St-Jacques. It has a serene and lofty interior with some wonderful and colorful stained glass windows. Chateau Musee is a museum of medieval castle and is a very impressive site up on the cliff, best seen from the beach side of town.


If you want enjoy a delicious dinner, the restaurants more famous are: - “Le colombier”, “A la marmite Dieppoise”, “Le comptoir des Huitres”: certificate of excellence.
