Nice – the city of "Mediterranean"

Nice, also named “Nice La Belle”, is a city located in the south of France. It is the 5th largest city of the country with about 350,000 inhabitants and is assumed to be one of the oldest human settlements in the whole world. After it belonged to Italy, it became a part of France in 1860. Over the years, Nice has become a cosmopolitan, vibrating city with a natural beauty at the same time. Many famous painters like Henri Matisse or Nici de SaintPhalle were inspired by the soft light and clean air in Nice. The city is very modern with many cultural activities such as exhibitions, congresses, festivals or other events like the “Nice Jazz Festival” but does not loose its tradition on the other hand.

In Nice, there are a lot of museums. In Musee Matisse, you will learn about the diverse work of a former Nice resident. Then, if you want to visit a designed gallery, go to the Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporain. You will discover over 400 works, with artistic movements from the 1960s to the present day. Afterwards, if you are not yet bored with museums, there is the Musee des Beaux Arts. Housed in a lavish, late 19th century building, it displays interesting works like sculptures or paintings. If you prefer to go outside, you shouldn’t miss to visit the old Nice, which is the historic part of the city. Or you can have a walk on the Promenade des Anglais, a six kilometres long promenade with an awesome view over the ocean and lined with palm trees. And if you want to relax, you can of course go to the beach. Finally, one thing you have to see if you come in Nice in February is the famous Carnaval of Nice, which is one of the largest ones in the world, with Carnaval of Rio.

You can once again walk the Promenade des Anglais because at night, the air is calm, scented and still warm. And the promenade lights make a necklace for the sea. Of course, you can't spend every evening just walking but don't worry, there are a lot of restaurant and bars.

Nice is not only breathtaking views and cultural visits. If you want to do shopping, you can go in the old Nice, where there is a market which sells food in the mornings from Tuesday to Sunday and antiques and bric-a-brac on Mondays. Then, the main shopping high street in Nice is Avenue Jean-Medecin. There, you can find the usual selection of shops and services: shoes, clothes, jewellery, various banks and cafés or fast food, etc. Further along Avenue Jean-Medecin, there is a small indoor shopping mall with 2 floors, called Nice Etoile.

Standard time zone: UTC/GMT +1 hour

Nice has a hot Mediterranean subtropical climate. Summers are dry and hot and on average, the warmest month is July, and the coolest one January. The average annual temperature is 15.1 degrees Celsius.

Public transportation

If you arrive at the airport, you can take the Nice Airport Express, which connects the airport and the town. Then, the popular public bus system of Nice Lignes d'Azur connects most parts of the city. There is also a tram, which connects the main train station and the fringes of the old town. And finally, the trains connect all the neighbouring towns.
